‘A Dark Look into the Children of God Cult’ will provide an unprecedented perspective into the most notorious religious group of the past 30 years, a cult with deep connections to Tucson, Arizona. A film and two authors with works on the cult, including a survivor, will shed light on the ritual sexual abuse of children in the cult.
On January 7, 2005 a young man in Tucson, Arizona made a haunting video tape in which he calmly discussed his childhood and the reasons for the murder-suicide he would commit the following day.
Rick Rodriguez was a young man who had been abused as a child and watched his sisters and peers also be molested and raped as children. He took a savage form of revenge against one of his abusers, before unloading a single bullet into his skull and ending his life.
The abuse he and thousands of his peers suffered took place in the Children of God cult now known as The Family International.
RISE International, a new international non-profit organization which has been set up to help protect children from abuse in cults, will show the 2006 British documentary film Cult Killer that chronicles the life and death of Rick Rodriguez and the history of The Children of God.
‘A Dark Look into the Children of God Cult’ is a fundraiser for RISE International and will also feature a short talk by Juliana Buhring, the best selling author of Not Without My Sister, a memoir of her growing up in, surviving and escaping the Children of God.
Award winning journalist Don Lattin will also speak about his recently released book, Jesus Freaks - Murder and Madness on the Evangelical Edge about the murder-suicide and the history of the Children of God in Arizona, California and Texas.
Both books will be available for purchase and signing by the authors.

All funds raised will go to RISE International, a non-profit Community Interest Company registered in the UK which works to protect children from abuse in cults, advocates for children’s basic human rights and supports those who seek justice for crimes committed against them as minors growing up in cults.
